Living in the Languedoc:    Education:    Overview of the Educational System

The Education system in the Languedoc is essentially the same as the highly centralised Education system throughout France. There are however two differences to bear in mind: the relatively low population density and some moves around the turn of the twenty-first century to decentralise the educational monolith to the Regions.
The significance of the low population density is that many village schools have had to close, and many more are under threat. If the number of pupils falls below a certain number (currently 6) then the school will close, and will not re-open until there are 10 pupils. Villages are generally keen to keep their schools open, so if you are moving to the Languedoc with children, you can expect a very warm welcome in certain villages. (Some people have found themselves cosseted by their prospective Marie, having accommodation and even jobs found for them, to encourage them to settle in that particular commune and save the local school.) If you are dubious about the benefits of a school with only one teacher and a handful of pupils covering a wide age range, then make an effort to see a documentary film on exactly this subject called "Etre et Avoir".
If your children are aged under 12, you do not need to worry about them attending a French speaking school without knowing the language. They will be fluent within three months. From 12 onwards it becomes progressively more difficult, and may become a problem if you have a slow introverted child who does not already speak some French.
