Things to See in the Languedoc:   Historic Towns:   Elne

Carcassonne. In the Fourth Century AD Elne was rebuilt in place of the old town Illibéris, and was renamed by Helen, Constantine's mother. At that time Elne was a coastal town, though it is now well in land.
From 675, Elne was the seat of an important bishopric.
